Dietmar Rieg and Governor Terry McAuliffe
Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe stopped by our GACC NYC office last month while in the city for a series of official meetings he attended. He had just returned from a marathon trade mission, meeting with partners around the world, including Germany. Joining the Governor at our GACC NY office were Virginia Secretary of Commerce & Trade Todd Haymore, and Tom Scott of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.
During congenial and informative discussions with our GACC NY group, the Governor stressed his commitment to maintaining good international relations with global partners like Germany in ways that also will contribute to increasing economic development in Virginia.
Governor McAuliffe eagerly pointed out that Virginia has an exceptionally low unemployment rate of 3.8%. As the state’s workforce ages, companies are experiencing an increased need for new skilled workers. The Governor stressed that the future of education is in skills training programs. In the last several years, Virginia’s education system served nearly 224,000 individuals in attaining credited courses and more than 66,000 individuals in customized workforce training and continuing education courses. Governor McAuliffe emphasized that with short training programs, people can acquire the skills the market needs and attain well-paying jobs in industries like welding and commercial driving, which currently suffer from a skills gap.
Key industries in the state include aerospace, IT and cybersecurity. As a pioneer in cyber applications, Virginia is working with its business, education and defense industry to lead innovation in unmanned drone systems.
GACC NY President & CEO Dietmar Rieg advised Governor McAuliffe about the myriad services the GACC provides to facilitate and promote transatlantic business between Germany and the U.S., especially with such programs as STEP and dual education. He cited the work and progress of numerous German companies operating in the U.S.

Corporate Innovation panel discussion at SAP Next-Gen in NYC.
Corporate entrepreneurship is a hot topic these days. For established firms to remain competitive, maintaining a rigorous innovative spirit is critical. Yet despite all the talk, many companies fall short on delivering this promise.
Deepak Krishamurthy, Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President at SAP, and Dietmar Rieg, President & CEO at GACC New York, welcomed nearly 100 guests to a panel discussion last month that addressed these crucial issues to achieving business success.
The importance of a dynamic corporate culture, openness to new ways of collaboration and the generational shift with Millennials conquering the work space were focal points of the discussion.
Inspired by the call to action that every employee can start corporate innovation, a post-panel discussion networking reception provided an additional platform to further elaborate on future trends in work environments.
Tech and Business Development Advisor Joshua Cohen moderated the panel comprised of: Jeremy K. Balkin, Head of Innovation for Retail Banking & Wealth Management at HSBC, Chandra Ramanathan, Vice President & Head, East Coast Innovation Center at Bayer and Drew LeBlanc, Director of Innovation, East Region at SAP.
